MKC’s Parents & Kids courses provide a great opportunity for families of all ages and different skill levels to learn in separate groups, yet vacation together.
Kayak: Parents are divided into skill-level adult groups, while Kids learn best paddling in a group of kayakers their own age.
We recommend starting the Sport of Whitewater in a Kayak. You sit closer to the water, gain faster reflexes, using two bladed paddle and best of all you learn to paddle solo. Reading the water and many of the paddling strokes are the same for both kayak and canoe, making these skills easily transferable when it comes time to running rapids. (note: not necessarily the other way around, due to the canoe being larger, slower and less maneuverable).
The weekend starts by getting outfitted with a size specific boat and paddling gear. Heading to the outflow of the rapids, we begin with the fundamentals on flat water first, before introducing the current. For Kids, games make it fun with learning happening along the way. Before you know it, your child will be shooting the rapids, solo – natural for this age group, especially when learning in a group of kayaking enthusiasts.
Mealtime brings families back together, sharing the day’s events. Saturday evening a riverside fire brings out guitars, river stories and a chance to roast ‘smores‘ –

Claudia, you have created something special here, as I trust you know. It's about more than just kayaking. People connect here in a very genuine way and learn new skills that translate to other facets of life. It is wonderful to see this delightful community here at MKC and to share it for a brief time.
