Thanksgiving
Weekend. . .
You
are invited to participate in this tough
end of season tour in the spectacular Madawaska Valley. Join members of the
Ottawa Bicycle Club, and Toronto Bike Network in the mutual enjoyment of
Fall's golden splendor and Claudia and Dirk's fine cuisine at the Madawaska
Kanu Centre, near Barry's Bay. A great weekend!
Madawaska tours are designed for
those who are challenged by tough terrain and are undeterred by inclement
weather. The Madawaska Valley offers splendid scenery, quiet roads and
campfire camaraderie at this woodland retreat. Tandems are especially
welcome.
Each day there is a choice of cycling routes,
60km, 100km & 130+ km, starting and finishing at the Centre. For mountain
bikers, there are excellent logging and single track trails behind the
property and a ½-hour drive away. Organized rides will be led by our hosts.
If the weather deters you from cycling, then a choice of hiking routes
along the river and logging roads in the adjacent hills are a good option.
For
accommodation, participants share 2-3 to a
lodge room or 4-6 in the dormitory. In keeping with the wilderness setting,
everyone must bring a towel and sleeping bag. Wilderness is not totally
without its consolations, however. Both showers and sauna are available.
Guests are expected Friday evening, leaving on the afternoon of the final
day, after the ride. For the inclusive price, guests receive
accommodation plus 3 breakfasts, 3 packed lunches and 2 dinners, plus maps
and route instructions. On road and trail, however, riders are expected to
be self sufficient - there is no sag wagon.
The Madawaska Kanu Centre is located
2km east of Siberia Road between Centreview and Barry's Bay.
From Toronto, it's via 401 and 115 to Peterborough, 28
north to Bancroft, 62 north to Maynooth and east to Purdy.
From Purdy, it's left at the Baptist Church and north
on Centreview Road to Centreview. There, 200 meters past the Bangor
Community Centre, turn right and continue for 6km north on Siberia Road to
the Madawaska bridge. Cross the bridge and in 0.5 km, turn right on River
Rd. Continue on River road - the Madwaska Kanu Centre is 3 km on the left.
